In 2016, from September 3rd till 25th; 3rd International Istanbul Triennial will be held at Maksem- Cumhuriyet Art Gallery in Taksim. The theme of ‘No Land’ will be focused on tragedy of those who are expelled from their homeland by forced migrations and exiles.

As much as being on international agenda, caused by forced migration and exile, refugee phenomena has its place in social and individual conscience. Understanding of the country, where people are bound to its geography without their own will and of conventionally constructed places has evolved radically with globalization and its company; migration. In various parts of the world, especially neighboring countries, hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to live far away from their homeland because of the invasions, coups, ethnic conflicts, authoritarian regimes, and human rights violations. People who are exposed to this marginalization have been left rootless on their land which has given them their identity, their sense of belonging has been damaged and in this way their identity has become fragmented and deterritorialized. Eventually one day, the home country which is expected to be a place to return will vanish and evolve to an object which is gone and therefore deprivation and the tragedy of refugees will be deepened.

Tens of thousands of refugees who are forced to migrate, whose choice and rights to live in their homeland or in any places are taken away. In order to inquire their problems within the language of contemporary art, 3rd International Istanbul Triennial with the theme of ‘No Land’ sets off to meet with its audience.
