Ara Güler is one of Turkey’s most important photographers and “Ara Güler’s Istanbul: 40 Years of Photographs” is a collection of his work taken between 1940-1980 which brings out the historical and cultural richness of the city.

Published by Thames & Hudson, the book contains an introduction penned by Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk. Composed of black and white photographs, the book is exemplary of Güler’s corpus. Filled with images of Istanbul’s most important places alongside photographs reflecting the everyday people and life in the city, the book is for Orhan Pamuk “a visual memory of urban history over a half a century”.
