Pera Film presents a selection of films to pay homage to Ronit Elkabetz who brought to life memorable female characters struggling for their liberty against the boundaries imposed by society. Beyond Boundaries comprises Elkabetz’s works in which she transformed Israeli and European cinema with a series of memorable characters: women on the margins of society struggling for their liberty against the institutions of family, tradition, marriage and the state. 

The Beyond Boundaries program presents nine films by Elkabetz which she directed or starred in. The program includes Sh’Chur which describes the colorful and passionate culture of the Moroccan community in Israel; Late Marriage which is a tragicomic depiction of the notions of family and marriage as told in a young man’s story; Or (My Treasure) which is the story of Ruthie who has lost all control of her life and her daughter who tries to find her mother another job; To Take a Wife which tells the story of Viviane who constantly finds herself up against the canons of traditional family life as imposed both by her husband and her siblings; The Band’s Visit which is the tragicomic story of an Egyptian police band that travels to Israel for a concert and immediately finds itself entangled in a number of misfortunes; 7 Days which is the story of a large family confronting its disagreements when they gather for mourning; Jaffa which focuses on a young woman as her secret love affair is revealed; The Flood which focuses on the story of Yoni who, at 13, already has a complicated life which is further aggravated with the arrival of his older brother Tomer; and, lastly, set completely in a courtroom and alternating back and forth between touching drama and bitter comedy, Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem which offers a striking portrayal of five years in a woman’s life as she tries to get a divorce.

Ronit Elkabetz was born in Be’er Sheva in 1964, the eldest daughter of parents who had immigrated to Israel from Morocco. A gifted cinema, stage and television actress, Elkabetz was also an award-winning screenwriter and director. Elkabetz wrote and portrayed the role of Viviane Amsalem in the trailblazing and award-studded cinematic trilogy she created together with her brother, Shlomi Elkabetz, in 2004-2014 (To Take A Wife7 Days and Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem). Between 1989 and 2016, Elkabetz participated in 27 films, 3 television movies and 4 series. She won dozens of awards for her film work, among them three Ophir Awards (the Israeli Oscars) for Best Actress. She was awarded lifetime achievement awards in New York, Paris and Tel Aviv. Elkabetz has died following a battle with cancer in 2016.
