Since Byzantine times, Istanbul’s bazaars have enchanted residents and visitors with their variety, richness and liveliness. Istanbul’s oldest bazaars became focal points for the businesses in the neighbourhoods that sprung up around them. During the Byzantine period, goods shipped from both East and West passed through the harbors located nearby. The maze-like covered bazaar Kapalıçarşı (Grand Bazaar) and Mısır Çarşısı (Spice Bazaar) are still among the most vibrant, attractive and colourful places in Istanbul.
