The Istanbul Theater Festival, which was first held in 1989, takes places once every two years in the month of May and introduces local and foreign dance and theater groups to the Istanbul stage.

The productions and assemblages held during the course of the festival bring different perspectives to theatre audiences and the art world. Local and international, classic and modern interpretations of works are invited to perform in keeping with the spirit of the festival.

The Istanbul Theater Festival has as its goal to highlight the intersections, similarities and differences between different cultures and nations in the world of art. It gives much importance to its long term partners in these projects and is working to steer further in this direction.

The festival awards its Yaşam Boyu Başarı Prize every year to one Turkish and one foreign artist. Every two years – in conjunction with a program that values educational projects, partnerships, and involving itself in contemporary social issues – the festival presents new developments and directions in the field of the performing arts at both the national and international levels.
