The Column of Constantine Porphyrogenitus or Walled Obelisk (Turkish: Örme Dikilitaş) – also known as the Constantine Obelisk – is located in Sultanahmet Square next to the Serpent Column. It was assembled from roughly cut stones. Although the date of the obelisk’s construction is unknown, it took its name from the Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus, who had the structure repaired in the 10th century. At one time there were bronze plaques with gold-lettering attached to the obelisk, but these were looted by Christian Crusaders.
